Federal law instituted in 1916 requires the American Supreme Court to open the new session—after the long summer break—on the first Monday in October.

But in 2016, Monday, October 3, was Rosh Hashanah. Three of the judges sitting on the Supreme Court, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer and Elena Kagan, who are all Jewish, were not present on the opening day of the US Supreme Court.

So what happened? The opening session lasted only about five minutes and consisted largely of admitting new attorneys to the Supreme Court bar. Because it was Rosh Hashanah, they would not hear arguments in cases until Tuesday. (On the official Supreme Court calendar, Monday October 3, 2016 is highlighted in blue, meaning it is a "non-argument session.")

But how did this happen? How did The Supreme Court yield to Rosh Hashanah?! After all, if any institution is going to follow American law, it would be the US Supreme Court. If the law dictates that the court opens on the first Monday of October Monday, how did the court surrender to RH?

So let me tell you the remarkable story, shared by Ruth Ginsburg herself at a dinner. This happened back in 2003. That year, Yom Kippur fell out on the first Monday of October. So the two Jewish judges, Justice Stephen Breyer and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg went to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Rehnquist, and requested that we delay the opening in deference to Yom Kippur. The Chief Justice was not persuaded. He said 'Why should we delay? We always hold our Friday conferences on Friday, even if it is Good Friday!' Why should Yom Kippur be given more prominence than Good Friday? So Ruth Ginsburg replied to him 'So move that conference to Thursday; that would be fine for us.' The Chief was still not persuaded.

So Ruth Ginsburg said to him:
“Lawyers wait their entire career to appear before the Supreme Court. For many of them, it is a once in a lifetime chance to argue in the Supreme Court. What if a Jewish lawyer wanted to appear in court on this Yom Kippur? We should not make that lawyer choose between observing his or her faith and appearing before the Court!”

That persuaded the Chief Justice. From that day it was decided that if RH or YK are on the first Monday of October, the court will open up for five minutes but no arguments would be heard so no lawyer should have to choose between his Judaism and his career!
Even the gentile Chief Justice understood that not a single Jewish lawyer trying to “make it” in America should have to neglect his Jewish heritage and faith. Every single Jew deserves the right to “remain a Jew” fully!
We can't believe Spring break is coming to an end😊.
So much has happened since March and we are truly inspired by each and every one of our student's resilience. With all the uncertainty in the world, there is one thing that we are certain about: Chabad will be here for you 24/7 365, whether you're coming back to campus or not.

Programming at your home away from home may look different from typical semesters, but even though we have to be physically distant, we will continue to be emotionally close. We will continue to have events in a safe, cautious way that is in accordance with CDC guidelines, MN gov guidelines, and SUA protocol.
With many blessings and healthy wishes,
My most beautiful beloved father was taken suddenly from me early Monday morning. No words can describe how shattered I feel. I was fondly called “darling girl” no matter how old I was. - Tatty I hold you close to my heart now and forever.
Girls, it would mean the world to me if you could light Shabbat candles in memory of my beloved father. Candle lighting in MSP is 7:17. Check Chabad.org for the correct lighting time in your city.
It is The University of Minnesota’s policy that missing class for a religious observance is an automatic excused absence and the professor must allow for you to make up all work PROVIDING YOU COMMUNICATE WITH THEM BEFORE HAND...
So email your profs now and remind them that next Monday and Tuesday is Rosh Hashanah and you’d like to be excused.
While you are at it now is a great time to RSVP for Rosh Hashanah meals and services at Jewishgopher.com/holidays
Just returned from the funeral of a pillar of the Jewish community.
A few years after Chabad was established on campus @myra Chazin saw the need and potential for Jewish Gophers. Myra stepped up and gave so much of herself and money to establish Chabad at the University of Minnesota. Many of her grandchildren were involved and became leaders in the organization. Today we didn’t just commemorate the end of her life but the beginning of blessings and memories.

She has so much to be proud of and so much Nachas has come and is coming her way.

She will live on through the deeds and Mitzvos her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren do in her memory.
